CINEMA TRIP !

Uncategorized

Dear Science Fiction and Fantasy members,

The time has come. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be out in cinemas Friday 12th December – and who wouldn’t LOVE to watch it in IMAX quality at one of the first showings?! Below will be all the details you need if you’re interested in coming along on our epic quest to the lonely mountain (or er, Gateshead to us human folk.)

We will be taking a trip to see The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in IMAX, Gateshead on Friday 12th December, at a 7pm showing.  We will be providing travel via a coach, so no need to worry about getting to and from the Metrocentre!

We have subsidized the cost of the trip to £14 in total for a student cinema ticket and return travel to the IMAX (you MUST bring your student card to the cinema otherwise you will have to pay for an adult ticket outright!)

The coach will pick up and drop off students from the DSU at 6pm – Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes early as if you are not present at 6pm the coach will have to leave due to traffic between Durham and Newcastle to arrive on time for the showing. This may mean for Queen’s Campus students getting the X1 earlier than you anticipate! The return journey should make it back to the DSU at approximately 11pm

If you want to buy tickets, you will need to buy them through the website at this link here (also if you are not a member you will need to purchase a 1 year membership – the price is still less than the overall cost of an individual ticket + travel!)

Get excited for our next meeting on Wednesday – 6:30 pm in ER141

6:30pm – The Strain Pilot

A thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

7:30pm – Dr Easy

This short film drops us into the middle of siege on a flat where a man is holed up with a shotgun. He has been injured and the police send in a Dr Easy robot to serve as medic and also as negotiator.

7:45pm – MST3k The Hands of Fate

A family vacation to Texas turns into a waking nightmare when they have a deadly run-in with Satanists fond of using human hands as sacrificial offerings. It’s as grim as it sounds.

Hope to see you all there!

Another message from our Fanzine Editor Thom

The next issue of the fanzine, Metamorphoses, is now open for submissions! The deadline will be Sunday 16th November, so we can publish it before the end of term and you can all read it as procrastination from deadlines. We’re looking for any and all sci-fi and fantasy writing – book/TV/film reviews (of any kind- if you want to rip apart the science of a blockbuster, or question the literary merit of a classic, it’s all good!), fanfics, original short stories, poetry, and artwork are also very welcome, the latter particularly for the cover.

Send all submissions and queries to Thom at c.t.a.addinall-biddulph@durham.ac.uk!

Don’t worry if you’re a novice writer- if you need any advice I’ll be happy to provide it!

Meeting Wednesday 15th October

Uncategorized

This weeks meeting will be held on Wednesday 15th October at 6:30pm in ER141.

6:30pm – Once Upon A Time

For Emma Swan, life’s been anything but a happy ending. But on her 28th birthday, one wish changes everything. The son she gave up for adoption ten years ago shows up on her doorstep, convinced that she comes from an alternate world and that her parents are Snow White and Prince Charming, who sent her away so she would be protected from a curse enacted by the Evil Queen.

7:30pm – Noon (Short)

A mining disaster has caused damage to the Earth’s core with devastating consequences. Half of the Earth’s population was killed and for the remainder they find a world thrown off its axis and, as a result the position of the sun in the sky is fixed, Antarctica is continual darkness and the Arctic is in constant daylight. A city has been established in the latter and the city is called Noon. In this short film we join one of many transport vehicles moving people into the city through the strict (and corrupt) security controls.

7:45pm – Ender’s Game

The Earth was ravaged by the Formics, an alien race seemingly determined to destroy humanity. Seventy years later, the people of Earth remain banded together to prevent their own annihilation from this technologically superior alien species. Ender Wiggin, a quiet but brilliant boy, may become the savior of the human race. He is separated from his beloved sister and his terrifying brother and brought to battle school in orbit around earth. He will be tested and honed into an empathetic killer who begins to despise what he does as he learns to fight in hopes of saving Earth and his family.

9:20pm – Pub!
